Beethoven, Overture Coriolan – This highly-charged overture to a tragic play depicts the conflicting emotions of a heroic and ambitious Roman general as his mother’s desperate appeals fatally sway him in his warlike resolve.
Chopin, Piano Concerto no. 2 – This deeply lyrical composition, written at age 20 and inspired by Chopin’s emotional involvement with a beautiful fellow student, offers the soloist ample opportunity for dazzling virtuosic display.
Mendelssohn, Symphony no. 4 (“Italian”) – Mendelssohn at his brilliant best, with a highly inventive work full of delightful surprises and contrasts, and bathed throughout in Italian sunshine.
